Obesity LInked To Poor Academic PerformanceYour Health Journal ...

From The Telegraph?..

Complications associated with being overweight are linked to lower school performance, it found..

The study found that children showing physical changes due to being obese, such as raised blood pressure, higher levels of bad cholesterol and resistance to the blood sugar controlling hormone, insulin, had poorer scores on thinking tests.

Experts said the findings were important and reinforced that being overweight as a child is not something trivial.

The findings were published online in the journal Pediatrics.

The researchers from New York University compared 49 children with metabolic syndrome, a collection of at least three health problems associated with obesity which can include a large waist, low good choelsterol, high blood fats, high blood pressure and insulin resistance which is a pre-cursor to type 2 diabetes.

Previous studies have suggested that adults with metabolic syndrome show deficits in thinking ability and this is the first study to show the same problem occurs in children.

The researchers concluded that even a few years of problems with metabolism may cause brain complications.

Lead investigator Dr Antonio Convit, professor of psychiatry and medicine at NYU School of Medicine compared 49 teenagers with metabolic syndrome to 62 without using standard exams, blood tests and brain scans.

They found that those classified as having metabolic syndrome showed significantly lower maths and spelling scores, as well as decreased attention span and mental flexibility.
