Amazing photo: Cargo vehicle docks with space station over Earth's city lights (+video)

Last week astronauts delivered an incredible image of a robotic cargo vehicle docking with the International Space Station.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station captured an extraordinary photo of an unmanned European cargo ship as it docked to the orbiting outpost last week.

Skip to next paragraph The International Space Station video update for April 9, 2012.

The European Space Agency's third Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV-3) launched into orbit on March 23, and arrived at the space station five days later, on March 28. The robotic cargo ship delivered about 7 tons of supplies, including water, oxygen, food, clothing, experiments and propellant.

The robotic ATV vehicles are designed to automatically dock to the space station. In this photo, the ATV-3 is approaching its parking spot at the Zvezda service module on the Russian segment of the orbiting complex.

The photo shows the ATV-3's distinctive x-wing solar arrays bathed in light from the spacecraft's sophisticated laser guidance system. The starry night sky and the glow of lights from Earth below make up the remarkable backdrop, as the two vehicles fly 240 miles (386 kilometers) above the planet.

American astronaut Don Pettit shared a version of the docking photo on Twitter the following day.

"ATV docks, breathing fire and bringing good stuff," Pettit wrote under the name @astro_Pettit.

?The cylindrical spacecraft is 35 feet (10.7 meters) long and 14.7 feet (4.5 meters) wide. The 13-ton cargo freighter is disposable and will remain attached to the space station for up to six months before it is loaded with garbage and sent to deliberately burn up as it re-enters Earth's atmosphere.

While NASA reported a power issue on the ATV-3 last weekend and a communications glitch on Thursday (April 5), both issues have since been resolved, and all systems are functioning normally, agency officials confirmed.

The European ATV vehicles are typically named after prominent historical figures in astronomy or space exploration. The ATV-3 is named "Edoardo Amaldi," after the famed Italian physicist who helped create the European Space Agency.

BBS version of Google takes you back in time, won't hog your phone line
If the third digit of your birth year is a nine (or heck, a zero), you'll likely never have experienced the true agony joy that was BBS or Bulletin Board Systems. Well, thanks to nostalgic developer Norbert Landsteiner, you can take a glimpse at how your dad got online with an HTML / JavaScript emulation BBS Google. Likewise, more seasoned travelers of the internet can take a trip down memory lane and see what Mountain View's search engine might have looked like "back in the day." All the details are there, right down to the familiar modem tones and ASCII graphics, it's even somewhat functional (when the API isn't over its limit.) So, want to appreciate that browser you complain about on twitter all the time over your LTE connection? Tab on down to the source link for a lesson in gratitude.

The Mobile Paradox

mobile-addictionGoogle?s stock declined by over 4% yesterday. Many have put this down to the company?s decision to create a non-voting class of stock as part of a control-retention exercise as the founders sell shares. But more is going on here. In the same week as Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion as part of its efforts to be more relevant on the growing mobile Platform, Google, for the second quarter in succession, suffered a decline in ?Cost Per Click? rates that is in large part attributable to the shift in traffic from the desktop/laptop to the mobile platform.

Canonical's AWESOME API bridges OpenStack and Amazon clouds, Ubuntu has its head in both
New features and services that improve Canonical's latest version of Ubuntu seem to keep rolling in. The latest addition being the announcement of its AWSOME proxy service. No, that's not us getting over excited about it, that stands for Any Web Service Over Me, and it includes APIs that smooth the transition to OpenStack from Amazon cloud services. Although not open source, Amazon's Web Service has such a large market share, that Canonical clearly want to make integrating with it as smooth as possible. The AWSOME proxy will only provide basic functionality for the AWS side of things, with users still encouraged to adopt the OpenStack infrastructure for deeper capabilities. Still, if you're currently working with Bezos' platform, and this was the last barrier to hopping aboard the Precise Pangolin ship, you're in luck.

GM: Explosion at battery research facility ?unrelated to the Chevrolet Volt?

One person was hurt at the GM research site in Michigan during ?extreme testing on a prototype battery? unrelated to the Volt ?or any other production vehicle,? the company said.

An explosion during "extreme battery testing" Wednesday morning of a prototype energy cell at a General Motors battery research facility in Warren, Mich., injured one person and did major structural damage to the building.

At the heart of the explosion was a lithium-ion battery, according to a fire department official cited in local news reports. The morning blast did not, however, involve batteries that power the Chevrolet Volt, the new plug-in hybrid car whose batteries caught fire weeks after a crash test, General Motors said in a statement.

But the flap over the Volt battery fire has left some insiders feeling more than a little peeved and defensive at the amount of news media attention being devoted to what they say is an almost inevitable, if not routine, event in the business of battery research and extreme testing.

"The whole reason they have these labs is precisely to do this kind of aggressive testing ? anticipating the worst thing a consumer could do with this product," says one expert with direct knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the explosion, who asked not to be named. "This is going to turn out to be a mountain out of a mole hill. Yeah, we're doing a lot of testing. That's what we have to do. Sometimes things explode."

?The incident is still under investigation by GM and the Warren authorities," the GM statement said. "Any information or discussion of the nature of the work in the lab or cause of the incident is entirely speculative and cannot be confirmed at this time. The incident was unrelated to the Chevrolet Volt or any other production vehicle. The incident was related to extreme testing on a prototype battery.?

Despite criticism of the Volt by conservative pundits, a follow-up investigation by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration concluded the new car was no more prone to fire than any other vehicle.

"The debate over batteries recently really hasn't been about safety so much as about their longevity," says Tom Turrentine, director of the plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle research center at the University of California, Davis. "I think we are mostly over the hump with battery safety. But there's no question that battery labs are notorious for explosions when they're testing."

Lithium-ion batteries are attractive to automakers because they can hold so much power ? about four times the amount of energy a conventional lead-acid battery. Even so, earlier lithium-ion batteries used in other commercial applications burst into flame on occasion. Laptop computer manufacturer Dell Computer recalled millions of batteries after a handful of its laptops burst into flames several years ago.

Frances Bean Cobain Defends Dave Grohl, Calls For Courtney Love Twitter Ban

Frances Bean Cobain has lashed out at her mother Courtney Love for claiming on Twitter than her late husband's bandmate Dave Grohl hit on her.

Love claimed Grohl "hit on" Frances and is "obsessed" with the teenage daughter of Kurt Cobain, and that "she was curious" about him as well.

Frances wasted no time in pointedly slamming the rumor and her mom.

Frances BeanCourtney Love Image

"While I'm generally silent on the affairs of my biological mother, her recent tirade has taken a gross turn," says Frances. "I have never been approached by Dave Grohl in more than a platonic way. I'm in a monogamous relationship and very happy."

Frances adds: "Twitter should ban my mother."

Grohl, the Nirvana drummer turned Foo Fighters frontman, also ripped Love, who claimed he was "sexually obsessed" with Frances and/or Kurt.

"Unfortunately Courtney is on another hateful Twitter rant," Grohl, the married father of two daughters, says through his rep in response.

"These new accusations are upsetting, offensive and absolutely untrue."

For her part, Frances Bean Cobain, 19, is happy at least, getting engaged to Isaiah Silva, frontman of the rock band the Rambles, last fall.

Gene switches do more than flip 'on' or 'off': Can exhibit much more complex binding behavior

ScienceDaily (Apr. 11, 2012) ? Anyone who's tried a weekend home improvement project knows that to do a job right, you've got to have the right tools. For cells, these "tools" are proteins encoded by genes. The right genes for the job are turned on only in the specific cells where they are needed. And every cell in your body has a specific job to do. Cells in your pancreas have to produce insulin, while cells in the retina of your eye must be able to sense light and color. Like using the wrong tool for the job, if the wrong genes are turned on in a cell, it can cause a real mess. Worse, in some cases it can cause serious disease like cancer.

Scientists have known this for decades. They've also known that there are specific proteins called "transcription factors" that control which genes are turned on or off in cells by binding to nearby DNA. Transcription factors were thought to act like a switch; they are either "on" (bound to DNA) or "off" (not bound).

A UNC-led team of scientists has now shown that transcription factors don't act like an 'on-off' switch, but instead can exhibit much more complex binding behavior.

"This is a new way of looking at how genes are controlled," says Jason Lieb, PhD, study senior author. "For a while now there have been molecular maps that show the location of where the proteins are bound to DNA -- like a roadmap. For the first time, we are able to show the molecular equivalent of a real-time traffic report." Their study appears in the April 12, 2012 issue of the journal Nature. Lieb is a professor of biology and a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Working in yeast, the UNC team learned that the transcription factors' binding process is dynamic and involves more than just being bound or unbound. In addition to a stable binding state (on or off), the team demonstrates a state that they call "treadmilling," where no forward transcription process is occurring. Within this process, they hypothesize the existence of a molecular "clutch" that converts treadmilling to a stable bound state, moving the transcription process forward to completion to turn the gene on.

Lieb explains, "This discovery is exciting because we developed a new way to measure and calculate how long a protein is associated with all of the different genes it regulates. This is important because it represents a new step in the process of how genes are regulated. And with every new step, there are opportunities for new mechanisms of regulation." Lieb is director of the Carolina Center for Genome Sciences.

He adds, "We found that proteins that bind in the stable state are associated with high levels of gene transcription. We think that if we can regulate the transition between treadmilling and stable binding, we can regulate the outcome in terms of gene expression. Ultimately, this type of regulation could be important for genetic medicine -- a new way to regulate the 'switches' that turn gene expression associated with disease on or off."

The team set up a controlled competition between two copies of the same transcription factor, each with a unique molecular tag. They let one of the proteins bind to all of its gene targets, then introduced the second copy. Next the team measured how long it took the competitor transcription factor to replace the resident protein and used this data to calculate the residence time at each location in the genome. Colin Lickwar, MS, first author of the paper, says, "We didn't know if the residence time was important, but we found that the residence time was a much better indicator of whether a gene was turned on or off than previous measures of binding."

Anthony Carter, PhD, who oversees gene regulation grants at the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of General Medical Sciences, explains, "By taking an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates the use of mathematical modeling tools, Dr. Lieb has shed new light on a fundamental cellular process, the ability to quickly shift between active and inactive states of gene expression. The findings may offer new insights on how cells respond to developmental cues and how they adapt to changing environmental conditions." The National Institute of General Medical Sciences partially supported the work.

Other UNC authors are: Sean E. Hanlon, PhD. Additional authors are James G. McNally, PhD. and Florian Mueller, PhD, both from the Laboratory of Receptor Biology and Gene Expression, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health.

Pigeon navigation finding called off-course

Biological ?sensor? in beaks may instead be immune system cells

Web edition : Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

Scientists may have been going in the wrong direction to find bird beaks? built-in navigation sensors, says a provocative new study.

Pigeons and other birds appear to use the Earth?s magnetic field, along with sights and sounds, to figure out where they?re flying. But the widely accepted identification of one set of magnetically sensitive cells is ?totally wrong,? says neuroscientist David Keays of the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology in Vienna.

He?s talking about work published in 2003 identifying clusters at six places in pigeons? upper beaks as nerve cells. Those clusters have little crystals of iron compounds that might serve as biological compass needles, the earlier study proposed.

For the new study, Keays and his colleagues looked for these cells in about 250,000 thin slices of tissue from beaks of more than 200 pigeons collected across Europe. Clusters of beak cells do contain iron, but it turns out that they?re not consistent in abundance or location, and most aren?t nerve cells at all, he says. Instead, they?re immune system cells called macrophages, he and his colleagues report online April 11 in Nature.

?If that?s true, this could be really important,? says neuroethologist Henrik Mouritsen of Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg in Germany. Discarding the old identification of beak sensors would mean researchers have to start from scratch looking for them.

In his own, earlier research, Mouritsen had examined some of the prepared tissue samples from the original beak study and now has seen several hundred tissue samples from the new study. ?After I looked at that, I thought there was a pretty high likelihood that Dr. Keays and his lab is right,? Mouritsen says.

?Not having found the structures ? does not mean that they do not exist,? say Gerta and G?nther Fleissner of Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany, coauthors of the original paper. In a critique, they emphasize that they never claimed that magnetically sensitive nerve cells are the only beak cells rich in iron. ?It is, in fact, a hard job to find the iron-containing [nerve] dendrite cells and, therefore, it is not astonishing at all that these authors obviously have overlooked them.?

Just how birds navigate is an intricate puzzle. Brain imaging and other research using magnetic fields in the lab suggests that birds pick up information from sensors somewhere in or near their beaks. Other research suggests a protein called cryptochrome in the retina of the bird eye is also involved in detecting the magnetic field. Pinpointing the cells involved and figuring out they work together has been a challenge.

Keays started his research hoping to identify the various compounds responsible for magnetic sensing, and at first, he says, he believed that beaks held six clusters of iron-rich nerve cells. ?Everybody believed it,? he says.

But staining tissue to highlight iron-rich structures shook his faith. One pigeon had 108,000 iron-containing cells, while another bird of the same age and sex had only about 200. If the cells were part of a sensing network, ?you?d expect similar-ish amounts,? he says.

Another pigeon had a beak infection, and staining showed tens of thousands of iron-containing cells at the infection site. Those samples inspired the notion that Keays and his colleagues might be looking at cells from the immune system. To test the idea, the research team combined various molecular highlighting techniques. In one test, substances that seek iron, along with antibodies that mark?macrophages, indicated almost identical areas.

Keays clarifies that he?s not challenging the basic idea that birds can detect Earth?s magnetic field, and he hopes researchers will keep looking for detectors in or near the beak. He got a taste of the reaction to his approach at a conference last year. After he unveiled his early results, he says, ?half the audience wanted to give me a hug, and the other half didn?t like me very much.?

DIY Home Improvement | Home Remodeling and DIY Home Job

Of course, nearly everyone as at some point tried DIY home improvement. But does it increase the potential selling value of a home after? According to interior designer Scot McAllister:

?Home improvements, their costs and their resultant profits are not a precise science. For this reason, it?s hard to specifically quantify what works and what doesn?t. For example, laminate flooring has undergone a popularity nosedive due to the market being flooded by so many photographic plastic options.?

McAllister continues with:

?Their cheapness has created a stigma ? and even expensive options have become tarred with the same brush. When replacement costs start ticking away in buyers? heads you don?t need to be Carol Vorderman to understand that offers will be reduced.?

DIY projects that increase the value of a home

To raise the value of a house, you need to carry out DIY home improvement projects that will definitely withstand the test of time.

For example, if you do have laminate flooring you can install vintage wooden doors.

?

To install wooden doors, you would need a screwdriver, a pair of thick gloves, 4-inch door-frame screws and a hammer. To remove the door from the frame, simply unscrew the hinges from the door frame.

Get that old door off

Once the hinges come off, slowly ease the door from frame itself, taking care not to damage the edges. You would want to of course, preserve the old door for use later on. Home values go up when front doors are beautiful- so choose the replacement door properly.

Another interesting DIY home improvement project that can raise the value of your home is replacing worn out bathroom tiles.

If the tiles are more than a decade old and you plan on selling within the next few months, now would be the opportune time to replace the tiles.

Replacing worn out tiles

The replacement of worn out bathroom tiles is a bit more difficult than the first project, Of course, the tiles in the bathroom can no longer be recovered completely intact, so make sure you can dispose of the broken tiles immediately afterward.

Designer tiles can be put in place of the old ones. Designer tiles employ a variety of new colors and textures that will naturally emphasize the dimensions of the bathroom.

?

For this project you would need a few sacks for tile disposal, a large chisel or a crow bar and a mallet or an equivalent. If possible, work the tiles when they are wet as this reduces friction and lessens dust clouds during working. Drive the crowbar against the underside of the tiles and slowly work around the tiles.

Ease the tiles off the floor, making sure that none are left behind. Smooth white cement may be used to install the new designer tiles after the bathroom floor has been re-leveled.

?

Justin Ray, an interior designer for the TV show How Not to Decorate warns people:

?A bad DIY project will always detract from the resale value. Anything that looks unprofessional, such as a badly-fitted kitchen or uneven plastering, will get buyers wondering.?

Is corn syrup killing the honeybees?

A trio of recent studies faults a common family of corn pesticides for disorienting honeybees, potentially leading to colony collapse disorder. The German chemical company Bayer, which manufactures the pesticides, disagrees. ?

Since 2006, something awfully strange has been happening to North America's commercial beehives. Beekeepers are finding that many of the boxed hives ranged throughout their apiaries have been inexplicably abandoned by worker bees. These ghost-hives typically have ample stores of honey and pollen, and hold gestating colony broods, sometimes even a lone queen.

This phenomenon is called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), and two papers published recently in the journal Science say that it is correlated with the presence of a ubiquitous class of insecticide called neonicotinoids. A newer study published in the Bulletin of Insectology suggests that this insecticide is introduced into bee colonies through, strangely enough, high-fructose corn syrup.

The insecticide was developed by Bayer AG, the German chemical and pharmaceutical giant most recognized for its original brand of aspirin. Today, the $53 billion company has released a rebuttal to the suggested link between neonicotinoids and Colony Collapse Disorder.

The population of feral honeybees in the US has been steadily decreasing for the past half-century, and is now almost nonexistent. In the same timescale, commercial honeybees experienced a shallower decline in population. However, since 2006, they have started rapidly disappearing in North America and Europe. Many scientists agree that the confluence of factors that drove population decline before 2006 is still in effect, but that something probably changed in light of the new rash of colony collapses.

Identifying the causes of CCD is a complex proposition, but the disorder's symptoms and effects are quite simple. It usually occurs when worker bees first depart their hives to forage, in winter or early spring. Then they don't return. Their hives typically have an active queen, ample food, and a developing brood ? not exactly the home a bee would abandon under normal circumstances. Many scientists have since suggested that pesticides may disorient bees or affect their memory, making them unable to navigate home.

Chensheng Lu, an environmental scientist at Harvard and the lead author on the Bulletin of Insectology paper, was curious as to how the insecticide may be introduced into the colony, and decided to investigate high-fructose corn syrup, which for the past decade has been used by beekeepers to supplement hives that have been decanted of honey. Much of the US corn crop is treated with neonicotinoids, and so trace amounts of the insecticides can often be found in the sugary syrup.

Lu and colleagues designed an experiment that would expose hives to concentrations ranging from 20 to 400 parts per billion. Within 4 months, 15 of the 16 experimental hives had been emptied by what appeared to be CCD, according to the researchers.

As more studies are published on this subject, the link between neonicontinoids and CCD may become more apparent. In this case, Bayer AG could only be held indirectly accountable, as it is the beekeepers who are substituting the inexpensive syrup for bee honey, thereby introducing the pesticide.

Earlier today Bayer released a statement that criticized the Harvard study, asserting that the sample size was too small to be statistically significant and that the "authors ignored the scientific consensus that bee health is impaired by multiple factors, including inadequate diet, pests and parasites such as the varroa mite, microbial diseases, mismanaged colonies, and loss of genetic diversity."

These are not unreasonable criticisms. Though the study authors certainly didn't "ignore" a "scientific consensus" on the multiple factors that could cause CCD. They simply investigated one of them. Nonetheless, scientists are still puzzled by the many possible causes of the disorder. They're also concerned, and for good reason.

The common honeybee is widely recognized as the most important insect pollinator. They're extremely versatile, able to collect both nectar and pollen and to transport it. They are easily managed by beekeepers, and live year-round, which means they will service a wide variety of plants. They're also fecund; one simple colony can consist of one queen, a few hundred drones and roughly 80,000 workers. There is no realistic scenario in which we could operate our mass-scale farms without them.

Bayer's concerns about the studies are not all that surprising considering the company's financial interests. But if more research confirms that its neonicotinoids are afflicting the commercial honeybee population, then they are threatening an enterprise on which Bayer crucially depends: agriculture itself.

lines and colors :: a blog about drawing, painting, illustration, comics ...

Thomas Kinkade
Longtime readers of Lines and Colors may be surprised to find me writing about Thomas Kinkade, as I normally only write about artists whose work I personally find appealing, and I wouldn?t be quick to put Kinkade on that list.

I do find him interesting as a phenomenon, however, and his untimely death yesterday at the age of 54 prompted me to mention him in that respect.

Thomas Kinckade was an American painter noted for his extraordinarily popular paintings of deliberately charming cottages, lush gardens, idyllic landscapes and townscape Americana, rendered in wide array of high-chroma colors.

On one hand, Kinkade has been the subject of derision from critics and art lovers as a purveyor of kitschy greeting card and calendar art sentimentality; on the other hand, his work is enormously popular in the U.S., and seems to hold a strong and almost magical appeal for some.

Kinkade is noted for his aggressive merchandising, in which a chain of franchise stores, usually in shopping malls, sell prints of various kinds and levels of expense, as well as a secondary line of merchandise, perhaps making him the ?Martha Stewart? of art related merchandising.

I can be critical of of Kinkade?s business practices, in which ?semi-original? commercial prints are touched up with oil by him or by assistants, signed by him in special ink, tagged with a special seal like a collectable coin from the Franklin Mint and sold for prices beyond what many other artists ask for originals in mall-based galleries that offer financing to purchase them.

There is also the controversial nature of his company?s gallery franchise profit percentages, coupled with the relentless marketing of his work and, most annoyingly to me, his absurd attempt to trademark the phrase ?Painter of Light? (which has historically been applied to J.M.W. Turner).

However readers familiar with my taste in art may be surprised that I?m not as harshly critical of Kinkade?s actual painting style as some might expect.

I find the wide popularity of his work, and in particular the intensity of the appeal it has for many, creates a fascinating angle on the question of what is ?visually appealing? in a work of art, and how artists have deliberately pursued, or eschewed, that element.

The late 20th century Modernists, of course, rejected anything with visual appeal as base as intellectually shallow ? art was, after all, the provence of the intellect, and more importantly, of the intellectual few sophisticated enough to appreciate the subtleties of the theories on which modernist painting was based.

Representational art has a history of wavering between visual appeal and intellectual or emotional content, with enormous variation. There are elements, however, that can be identified as having immediate visual appeal as well as emotional resonance.

But what makes a painting visually appealing, in the combinations of subject matter, color composition, value, paint surface? all of the elements painters bring to bear in their work, and why is there such difference between the perception of those elements by different individuals?

Resisting the temptation to jump on the bandwagon and dismiss Kinkade?s work as treacle, I find it fascinating that he was a painter who evidently pursued the the question of ?visual appeal? with dogged singularity.

Though I don?t respond to the particular style of visual appeal Kinkade has pursued in the way his legions of admirers do (and some respond very strongly indeed, spending quite a bit of money to purchase multiple ?semi-original? prints), I can see within it many techniques that can be found in other styles and genres of art that are designed to have ?Eye Candy? visual appeal.

One is the use of paired complementary colors, frequently associated with the French Impressionists, and notable in contemporary film and gaming concept art (as well as in the subsequent movies and games ? as a case in point, look at something like the ?robot assembly line? sequence in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and note the colors and lighting).

You can see the combination of complementary color pairs and strong value contrasts used by painters like John Atkinson Grimshaw and the post-Impressionist ?Painters of Paris? like Antoine Blanchard and Edouard-L?on Cort?s repeated throughout Kinkade?s work, sometimes overtly, as in the images above, bottom two, done under the pseudonym ?Robert Girrard?.

You can also see nods to the 19th century history painters like Lawrence Alma-Tadema in Kinkade?s fanciful arcadian gardens and faux classical structures, as well as a take on Maxfield Parrish?s use of similar visual props.

Similarity to Disney cartoon background painting is evident in Kinkade?s cottages and gardens, and becomes obvious in his own series of official Disney homage paintings (which look perfectly in keeping with the studio?s aesthetic).

Kinkade has extracted that aesthetic, distilled it, and applied it to his cottage scenes in heavy doses, with warm light glowing from multi-paned windows ? even in daylight, and smoke wafting from idealized brick chimneys emerging from storybook roofs.

You can also see Kinkade?s adoption of the stylized fantasy shrubbery of Eyvind Earle, as well as his intense color combinations, though even more exaggerated.

I tend of think of Kinkade essentially as a fantasy painter, despite the lack of overt elves and fairies, in that he presents his viewers with an escape into an alternate world where harsh reality doesn?t intrude, and magic has more sway than physics. In the process he also borrows additional techniques from fantasy artists in terms of adding elements of fantasy landscape ?eye candy?.

If I look through Kinkade?s images, I have to admit there are passages that I find visually appealing, and might admire more readily in a different context, particularly if utilized in a scene with less ?visual charm density? ? notably the effects of dappled light and the look of backgrounds faded into textural renderings of mist and haze.

So whatever you think of Kinkade?s work, you may find it worth putting prejudices aside and taking a closer look at individual elements in his paintings in the context of Kinkade as a ?Painter of Charm?.

Could Now Be The Time For Solar Power? - Home - odugutumad's ...

If you live in Massachusetts, the answer is a resounding yes!

Due to the variety of incentives at both the state as well as the national level to purchase solar panels, there really has never been a more rewarding time to go green with solar energy. Most residential systems will pay for themselves in less than five years.

Currently the retail price for a five kW solar panel set up is around $25,000. This system is going to give you about 6,000 kWh of power every twelve months in Massachusetts and provide just about 60% of the standard residential household?s electricity requirements.

There is a Commonwealth Rebate which will deduct $2,000 off that price. Plus, if you reside in a moderate house or earn a moderate wage, you will be given an additional $2,000 reduction. Or if you happen to have been unlucky enough to have your house damaged during last year?s tornadoes, you will be given a further five thousand dollars reduction.

There also are both federal and state tax credits. Currently the federal tax credit sits at a fantastic 30% and the state credit is for $1,000. After the rebates and additionally the tax credits, you should be able to obtain a 5 kW solar panel array for $16,000, less in case you receive the moderate income or moderate home value adders. A system of that size in Massachusetts ought to provide an average of close to $80 worth of electrical energy monthly yielding a yearly savings of $1,000.

But the best long-term revenues come from auctioning off your SRECs. One megawatt hour (1,000 kWh) earns you one SREC and a 5 kW system ought to emit almost 6,000 kWh yearly. Since the state has compelled the electricity companies to produce a small percent of their total electrical power using green methods, they will provide you with around $400 for every one of those 6 SRECs so they can say that you?re generating electrical energy for them. Consequently that?s another $2,400 in tax-free income right into your wallet every year. So now you can ?have an understanding of? a $16,000 solar panel array can easily be paid off in slightly less than 5 short years as it nets $3,400 annually including electricity savings coupled with SREC compensation.

Solar panels can also be among the best home improvement possibilities open to the Massachusetts resident. For a selling price of $16,000, it should increase the worth of your residence by $20,000. That is a 125% return on investment. Nearly all home improvement projects won?t pay for themselves completely. Solar panels not only increase the worth of your own home above what they can cost, they will make you money each year in the process. They are even exempt from property taxes for 20 years.

And additionally let us bear in mind the main reason these types of stimuli exist in the first place ? to save our planet. A 5 kilowatt solar panel array is going to lessen your carbon footprint by at least one-hundred tons of carbon dioxide across twenty-five years, the equivalent of planting eight hundred trees. Every year, it?s going to stop the equivalent of about three tons of coal or 20,000 cubic feet of natural gas from being used to generate electrical power.

As you can see from the many stimuli presently available that right now unquestionably would be the right time for solar power. The Commonwealth Rebate together with the federal and state tax credits trim down your initial costs. And the electric bill savings plus the SREC program add significant returns and bolster your home?s resale value. What?s more there?s simply no telling just how much longer each of these promotions will be available. The Commonwealth Rebate has already been decreased recently plus the federal tax credit has been threatened annually.

Additionally, while this industry matures, a greater number of financing approaches are becoming available to homeowners, making solar energy economical for everyone. Without a doubt if you?ve always desired to buy solar panels, there has certainly never been a better time than right now!

Gary S. Best lives in Massachusetts and spent months researching the various stimuli and financing alternatives prior to deciding to purchase a 5 kW solar panel system in 2011. He has since started a web site, Mass Solar Info.com, educating residents on the subject of solar energy in Massachusetts in addition to providing them with a means to see solar company ratings, easily receive no-cost estimates and save as much as $500 off their own installation.

Coordinating the circadian clock: Molecular pair controls time-keeping and fat metabolism

ScienceDaily (Apr. 6, 2012) ? The 24-hour internal clock controls many aspects of human behavior and physiology, including sleep, blood pressure, and metabolism. Disruption in circadian rhythms leads to increased incidence of many diseases, including metabolic disease and cancer. Each cell of the body has its own internal timing mechanism, which is controlled by proteins that keep one another in check.

One of these proteins, called Rev-erb alpha, was thought to have a subordinate role because the clock runs fairly normally in its absence. New work, published in Genes and Development this month, from the lab of Mitchell Lazar, MD, PhD, director of the Institute for Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, found that a closely related protein called Rev-erb beta serves as a back-up for Rev-erb alpha. When both are not functioning, the cellular clock loses its time-keeping function.

The two Rev-erbs work together to control fat metabolism, and in their absence, the liver fills with fat. These findings establish the Rev-erbs as major regulators of both clock function and metabolism.

Lazar, postdoctoral fellow Anne Bugge, PhD, and the team knocked out Rev-erb alpha in mice and didn't see a large effect on the liver. When they knocked out both Rev-erb alpha and Rev-erb beta, they saw a loss of the rhythmic cycling of the clock protein Bmal 1's messenger RNA. They concluded that the Rev-erb system is an integral part of the human clock, not ancillary.

Prior to this paper, the Lazar team discovered molecules that act as "shift workers" to maintain the daily rhythm of fat metabolism. When those molecules do not do their jobs, the liver also dramatically fills with fat.

In normal mice, the team of molecules migrates to the genome of liver cells during the daytime. Rev-erb, one of the team members, delivers the molecular workers to thousands of specific locations in the liver genome, many of which are near genes involved in the production of fat. Another team member, histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3), does construction work on the protein scaffold (the epigenome) surrounding the genome to dampen the activity of the fat-related genes.

During the night, the day shift molecules depart the liver genome, and fat production increases due to other regulatory molecules. The fat production is kept in check when the Rev-erb construction team returns to the genome the next day. However, if HDAC3 is absent, the cycles do not occur, and the liver fills with fat.

The absence of both Rev-erbs prevents HDAC3 from doing its job, since Rev-erbs serve as the shuttle delivering HDAC3 to target genes. Sure enough, fat accumulates in the liver to a much great extent when both Rev-erbs are missing compared to when one is still available.

"This work shows that if we want to manipulate the human clock we would likely need to affect both Rev-erb alpha and Rev-erb beta," explains Lazar. "Circadian rhythm of metabolism is important because disruption of this rhythm leads to a fatty liver. This may explain, in part, why altered circadian rhythms in people who do shift work is associated with metabolic disorders."

Soul by Ludacris SL99

After Dr. Dre started the craze with his successful Beats by Dr. Dre audio line-up, many celebrities?several of them hip hop stars like 50 Cent, Sean "Diddy" Combs, and Ludacris?have followed suit with their own earphones. The Soul by Ludacris SL99 is part of the second generation of audio offerings from Ludacris. At $99.95 (direct), the SL99 is priced to compete with pairs like the Bose IE2 ($99.95, 4 stars) and the slightly more expensive Shure SE215 ($119, 4 stars). With strong bass and tweaked high frequencies, the SL99 offers powerful audio performance, but purists seeking flat response will be disappointed.

Design
The primary color of the SL99 is black, with some metallic accents on the earpieces, as well as the "S" logo for Soul by Ludacris. The cable is straight out of the Monster Beats by Dr. Dre Tour High Resolution In-Ear Headphones ($149.95, 4 stars) school of design?flat like linguini. It's a nice look, and the raised buttons on the control compartment for the iPhone (and iPad and iPod) are easy to use. But their placement, high up on the right earpiece's cable, make them hard to see. This is a common issue with Apple earphone controls, however?and since it's nearly across the board, it's possible Apple mandated this placement, favoring call clarity over convenience.

That aside, the controls handle playback, as well as track and menu navigation, along with call answering and ending. The ASL99 fits in the ear quite securely, and it comes with three pairs of eartips in various sizes. A black protective zip-up carrying case is also included.SOUL_by_Ludacris_SL99_250w

Performance
One common problem with $100-and-below earphones is distortion on deep bass tracks. Even at maximum, painfully loud volume, the SL99 does not suffer from this issue. The bass response, in fact, is quite intense. On the Knife's "Silent Shout," a track with enough low-end to turn less powerful earphones into a fuzzy distorted mess, the SL99 has no issues reproducing the song's deeply resonant electronic thump with gusto, even at top volume.

After it passes the power test, however, the SL99 is a bit lacking in aesthetics. Bill Callahan's vocals on his most recent album, Apocalypse, as well as the brass sections on John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," can at times sound pinched, or nasally. The overall response is never painfully bright, but it does sound as if certain frequencies in the mid-to-high realm are too boosted, which is a common issue with earphones that bump the low frequencies as high as the SL99 has.

Without a reciprocal boost in the mids and highs, the overall mix would sound like mud. As it is, the sound signature is never muddy, but the bass could be more articulate. Alas, the SL99 seems to favor low-end presence more than low-end clarity. For hip hop, electronic music, and some modern pop, this can actually have a pleasant effect. Many modern mixes are made for clubs with massive sound systems, where the bass is the most important aspect of the music. It's not a very accurate sound, however, and it limits what genres the SL99 excels with: Classical, folk, and jazz do not fare as well as bass-oriented pop music.

Conclusions
By no means a poor choice, the?Soul by Ludacris SL99 shows serious promise, but it's overpriced considering what the competition is offering.?The Editors' Choice?AKG K 350 ($79.95, 4 stars) provides tremendous value in an assuming package. It exhibits minor distortion at high volume on deep bass tracks, but at reasonable listening levels, its overall sound signature offers a better balance. Even for bass lovers, the same-price Bose IE2 offers a more secure fit and better-balanced sound.?If you have a little more money to spend, the $120 Shure SE215 features excellent audio performance, as well as the rare detachable cable, a feature that helps extend the life (and value) of the earphones.
