There?s a Silver Lining for Sands China in Macau
A positive outlook for the mass segment in the world?s largest gaming market, Macau, could be the silver lining for the shares of Hong-Kong listed Sands China, which hit a seven-month low late last week after its parent company, Las Vegas Sands, reported second-quarter earnings that were? worse than expected, analysts told CNBC.

Shares of gaming operators in Macau have taken a hit from the weaker outlook for revenue growth as China?s economy slows. Sands China shares are down about 30 percent from a peak hit in mid-April, while Hong-Kong listed rivals, Wynn Macau, a unit of U.S. gaming company Wynn Resorts, and SJM Holdings, founded by Hong Kong billionaire Stanley Ho, have fallen around 38 percent and 24 percent, respectively in the last three months.
Las Vegas Sands reported last week that net income at its Macau unit, Sands China, fell 40 percent year-on-year to $160.5 million in the second quarter because of higher-than-expected opening expenses at Cotai Central, the new Sands? Macau casino that opened in April, and on a $1.01 billion impairment charge on two land parcels.
?We?re not worried about the Las Vegas Sands results. If you look at Macau there?s no other casino that can touch them in terms of what they have to offer the mass market,? said Govertsen.
He adds that Sands China is better positioned than its competitors like SJM to tap the middle class visitors especially from China given the expected growth in the number of hotel rooms, slot machines and table games that it operates directly.
Sands China shares gained some lost ground on Monday, climbing almost 6 percent to HK$23.15 ($2.98). CLSA?s Analyst Richard Huang says Sands China is his top pick among Macau gaming stocks. He said CLSA has a buy recommendation on the stock with a target price of HK$33.3.
?Mass market gaming revenue growth has remained robust. The mass gaming segment is also the high-profit margin segment with an Ebitda margin at around 40 percent (versus a VIP gaming Ebitda margin of around 10 percent). And Sands China is the company with the highest exposure to the mass market,? Huang said.
According to Fitch Ratings, The VIP segment makes up slightly more than 70 percent of the overall market in Macau and over the last several years has grown faster than the mass market.
?However, we expect that to change over the next several years, with faster growth occurring in the mass market. The mass market will likely make up an increasingly larger portion of the market, as the next wave of supply growth starts to come on line in 2015-2016,? Fitch said in a report published last week.
Fitch Ratings last week revised down its 2012 Macau revenue growth forecast to 10-12 percent from 15 percent earlier to reflect a more cautious view in terms of the impact a slowdown in China will have in the near-term.
Macau gaming revenues grew 42 percent in 2011 and 58 percent in 2010, according to Fitch.

Two exams are necessary to be certified: LX0-101 and LX0-102.? LX0-101 covers system architecture; Linux Installation and package management; GNU and Unix commands; devices, Linux filesystems, and filesystem hierarchy standard. LX0-102 covers shells, scripting and data management; user interfaces and desktops; administrative tasks; essential system services; networking fundamentals; security. Below is a summary of the exam and certification process.
Each exam consists of 90 questions. Previously the passing score was 675 out of 900. But, as the table shows, now it scaled and passing score is 500, in a scale of 200-800. 200 means a possible lowest score and 800 is highest.

Syrian troops shell neighborhoods of largest city
The Syrian regime accused regional powerhouses Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey of trying to destroy the country and vowed Sunday that it would defeat rebels who have captured large swathes of the commercial hub Aleppo.
Military forces in Aleppo fired tank and artillery shells at neighborhoods as rebels tried to repel the government air and ground assault. According to activists, rebels who launched an operation to take over Syria's largest city a week ago are estimated to control between a third and a half of Aleppo's neighborhoods.
Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, on a visit to Iran, leveled some rare public criticism of Sunni powers in the Middle East, saying Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are supporting a plot hatched by Israel to destroy Syria. The three countries have all been backing rebels trying to overthrow authoritarian President Bashar Assad.
"Israel is the mastermind of all in this crisis," Moallem told a joint news conference in Tehran with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi . "They (Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey) are fighting in the same front."
The battle for Aleppo, once a bastion of support for Assad's regime, is critical for both the regime and the opposition. Its fall would be a major blow to Assad, giving the opposition a major strategic victory with a new stronghold in the north.

Today, they've gone to Aleppo and definitely they will be defeated in Aleppo," he added. The rebels mounted a challenge to the regime in Damascus before the assault on Aleppo, but after a week of intense clashes, they were defeated.
Iran, Syria's only remaining ally in the Middle East, has provided Assad's government with military and political backing for years, and has kept up its strong support for the regime since the uprising began in March 2011.
Sunday's bombardment was part of a government counter-offensive to retake control of districts that had fallen into rebel hands last week at the beginning of their bid to capture Aleppo.
Activists said the shelling was most intense in the southwestern neighborhoods of Salaheddine, Bustan al-Qasr and parts of Saif al-Dawla, some of the first areas seized by the rebels when they started the push last week after being routed in a similar attack against the capital Damascus.
"Life in Aleppo has become unbearable. I'm in my car and I'm leaving right now," said a Syrian opposition writer who was fleeing the city Sunday. "There's shelling night and day, every day," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.
The writer and other activists from Aleppo said economic conditions had become dire in the city.
"Bread, gasoline and gas are being sold on the black market at very high prices," he said. "Many things are in shortage."
State-run news agency SANA said security agents were hunting down armed groups in several areas of Aleppo including Salaheddine, inflicting heavy losses upon the "terrorists" ? the term authorities use to describe the rebels.
SANA quoted an Aleppo official as saying troops would continue until the city is "purged" of armed groups and peace and tranquility is restored.

U.S. pipeline agency probes Enbridge oil spill in Wisconsin
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. pipeline safety agency launched an investigation on Saturday into an oil spill in Wisconsin on Enbridge Inc's network that forced the partial shutdown of a main artery carrying light sweet Canadian crude to Chicago-area refineries.
Enbridge's 318,000 barrel per day Line 14 pipeline, part of the Lakehead system, was shut after an estimated 1,200 barrels of oil were leaked. This happened almost two years to the day after another major spill in a different section of the line, in Michigan.
Enbridge Energy Partners said on Friday there was not yet a time frame for when flows would resume, and the cause of the spill had not yet been determined.
"(The U.S. Transportation Department's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration) is investigating the cause of the Enbridge crude oil pipeline failure in Wisconsin," spokesman Damon Hill said in an email on Saturday, adding that an inspector had been sent to the location of the pipeline failure.
Line 14 is one of four lines that ship mainly Canadian crude via Lakehead, a 2.5 million bpd network that is the principal route for Canadian exports.
The news will not help Enbridge build public trust in its network, which has come under scrutiny following several high-profile incidents, including a spill in Alberta last month and the massive leak in Michigan two years ago.
Just weeks ago, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board delivered a scathing report of Enbridge's handling of the July 2010 rupture of its Line 6B near Marshall, Michigan, which led to more than 20,000 barrels of crude leaking into the Kalamazoo River.
The NTSB said it found a complete breakdown of company safety measures, and that Enbridge employees performed like "Keystone Kops" trying to contain it. The rupture went undetected for 17 hours.
U.S. pipeline regulators fined it $3.7 million for the spill, their largest ever penalty.
The incidents have caused furor just as the company seeks approval for its C$6 billion Northern Gateway pipeline to Canada's West Coast from Alberta amid staunch opposition from environmental groups and native communities that warn against oil spills on land and in coastal waters.
Enbridge said Line 14 was a 24-inch diameter pipe that was installed in 1998, making it a relatively new line.
In most cases, smaller pipeline leaks can be repaired quickly allowing operations to resume pumping, although regulators may require significant work if they find any cause for alarm. Following the leak two years ago, the line was shut for over two months.
No injury was reported on Friday at the line, which is near Grand Marsh, Wisconsin, Enbridge said.

The tour is part of a campaign called "Get Curious" that was created to honor the new Curiosity Mars rover, the main element of the Mars Science Laboratory mission, which is due to land on our neighboring world Aug. 6. The $2.5 billion rover is designed to spend at least two years on Mars searching for clues that Mars may have been habitable to life at some point.
"Get Curious" will send large boulders manufactured to look like Martian rocks to eight U.S. cities between July 26 and Aug. 9. No rocks have ever been brought back to Earth from the Red Planet, but these large synthetic constructions are designed to resemble the real thing as closely as possible.
The rocks will visit Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Boston; Detroit; Columbus, Ohio; Houston; Indianapolis; and Orlando.
"We are excited that Columbus was designated a 'Mars City,' and that COSI can be a part of the 'Get Curious' campaign," said Joshua Sarver, senior director of experience design and production at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI), the stop location in Columbus, in a statement. "We continually think of ways to captivate our visitors at COSI, and we think the Mars rock in front of the center will attract a lot of attention and pique interest. We are pleased to be able to show our support for the Curiosity rover landing and continue to help raise awareness for scientific discovery and space exploration."
Each ersatz Mars rock will be emblazoned with the URL www.GetCurious.com and a QR code plaque directing people to the campaign's website. The project is sponsored by Explore Mars, a Mars exploration outreach nonprofit, and rocket company United Launch Alliance, which built the Atlas V-541 rocket that launched Curiosity toward Mars in November 2011.

Introducing Our New Video Series: The Countdown

Cuba broadens economic reforms, plans new measures
HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuba adopted a new tax code this week and said it would loosen regulations on some state companies while turning others into cooperatives, as one of the world's last Soviet-style economies moves in a more market-friendly direction.
The plans were announced at a session of the National Assembly, which passed the country's first comprehensive tax code since the 1959 revolution on the communist-ruled island.
Foreign journalists were barred from Monday's meeting, only portions of which were later broadcast by the official media.
President Raul Castro, 81, has liberalized regulations for small businesses and farming, and begun leasing small state retail outlets to employees since taking over for his ailing older brother Fidel in 2008. But he now appears ready, says Cuba expert Phil Peters, "to put some meat on the bone."
Marino Murillo, head of the Communist Party commission responsible for implementing reforms approved at a party Congress last year, characterized the tax law as providing the basis for "?bringing up to date the economic model," while releasing few details of the code.
The new law takes effect next year and is scheduled for publication next month.
Castro's point man for reform said it would gradually replace an old Soviet-style system and eventually require everyone to pay income and property taxes for the first time since the 1960s.
Murillo, in a two-hour presentation to the National Assembly, announced that an unspecified number of state companies would be partially deregulated by the end of the year.
He said the companies, previously part of various ministries, would be able to make day-to-day business decisions without waiting for government approval, manage their labor relations and set prices. After meeting state contracts, they will also be able to sell excess production on the open market.
The companies will be self-financed, including through bank credits, and expected to cover their losses, versus handing over all profit to the state and receiving financing and subsidies from the treasury.
Instead of being micro-managed by the ministries, Murillo said the companies would be evaluated by "four or five indicators" such as earnings, the relation of productivity to salaries and their ability to meet the terms of state contracts.
Murillo also announced that 222 small to medium-sized state businesses were preparing to become cooperatives, ranging from restaurants and produce markets to shrimp breeding and transportation.
The cooperatives will lease state property and equipment at 10-year renewable intervals, operate on a market basis, pay taxes like other companies and divide profits among members as they see fit, Murillo said.
"SLOW BUT STEADY"
"They have been rolling things out one by one on a slow but steady timetable and my guess is they will continue to do so. It's a timeline that goes to 2015," Peters, a vice president of the Virginia-based Lexington Institute, said.
"Now they are getting to the things that really have the ability to increase the size of the private sector and create the savings in the state sector that they say are their targets," he said.
Cuba, with a foreign debt of more than $22 billion according to Reuters' estimates and still mired in a post-Soviet crisis after 20 years, has no choice but to change its inefficient ways, government insiders say.
Marino said as much during the National Assembly meeting.
"We are not calling for turmoil ... but the reality of life shows we cannot maintain (a command economy)," he said.
The five-year reform plan calls for moving from government administration of just about the entire economy to managing it through ?"indirect" means such as taxes and bank credits.
Most retail services and minor production and farming are scheduled to go over to a ?"non-state" sector that will account for more than 40 percent of the labor force, compared with the current 15 percent.
At the same time, the Communist Party plans to move away from a paternalistic state system of collective work and consumption to one where individual effort is better rewarded. Across the board subsidized goods and services are to be replaced by targeted welfare.
Castro, who closed the National Assembly meeting, said the new measures would ?"permit the state to forget about the administration of a set of secondary services and productions and concentrate on improving the management of the basic means of production which will remain as socialist state companies."
Murillo also announced that the government would lease to its employees more than 1,000 small cafeterias, following in the footsteps of barbershops, hairdressers and a host of other minor services let go over the last few years.
The former state establishments now must compete head to head with a burgeoning small business sector of more than 300,000 mom-and-pop operations, including restaurants and other small companies.
Murillo said the new tax code would cut small business taxes on average by between 3 and 7 percent and provide other benefits for start-ups, such as eliminating the labor tax for those with five employees or less.
The new law will also benefit small farmers, he said.

LONDON (AP) ? A British man has won a challenge against his conviction for tweeting that he would blow up an airport if his flight was canceled.
Paul Chambers became an Internet free-speech cause celebre when he was convicted and fined in 2010 for using Twitter to say he would blow Robin Hood Airport in northern England "sky high" if his flight, due to leave a week later, was delayed.
He insisted he was joking, but a court convicted him of sending menacing or offensive messages.
High Court Judges on Friday overturned the conviction, saying there was no evidence to suggest that anyone who saw the tweet found it to be menacing or alarming.
Chambers expressed his relief after the verdict, saying it was ridiculous the case ever got so far.

(And things will get even cozier when iOS 6 arrives in the fall, of course).

Mirror, mirror on the ... TV?
Thanks to AirPlay mirroring, you can wirelessly send whatever's on your Mac to an HDTV, via the $99 Apple TV box. Getting your computer ready for Mountain Lion
Convinced that this is the update for you? Great! There are a few things you should do before rushing off and attempting to download Mountain?Lion though:
- Check if your computer can handle Mountain Lion. You should be running OS X 10.6.8 or higher, have 2GB of memory and 8GB of available space. (You should be using recent Mac model. Check this list to see if yours is supported.)
- Update your third-party apps. Odds are that many of your favorite apps will get updates to make them compatible with Mountain Lion, so just go ahead and take care of those now.
- Backup your files. We can't emphasize the importance of backing up your files enough. Plenty of things can go wrong on an ordinary day, but you're just asking for trouble if you're upgrading your operating system without a backup.

It?s summer and that brings with it some pros and cons for business travel. Pro: It?s easier and more pleasant to mix business travel with fun and tack a few days on for sightseeing or a mini-vacation at the end of your business trip. Con: With families and leisure travelers crowding the airports on their vacations, getting where you need to go for business travel can be a bigger hassle than at other times of the year. In this guest post, Bob Diener, president of getaroom.com, offers 12 tips to help make business travel smoother and more carefree this summer.
- Never pay full price ? there is always a way to get a?deal. For example, many hotels have lower rates if you check in on Sunday night instead of Monday.
- Find the lowest hotel rate online and then call getaroom.com to see if they have a lower unpublished rate.
- Instead of checking five or six travel, airline or hotel sites for the lowest airfare or hotel rate, go to Kayak.com where you can check hundreds of sites with one click.
- Bring your Wi-Fi hotspot with you so you don?t have to pay for Internet usage at airports and hotels.
- Always join the frequent stay program of the hotel you are staying at. In addition to rewards points, many of these programs offer you perks such as late checkout, free gym use, free newspapers, free upgrades and more.
- Don?t pay to log on to the Internet at the airport. Use the Delta Crown Room, which offers free Internet usage and free food.
- Remember Southwest Airlines? They don?t put their fares on most online travel agency sites, but they often have lower fares than other airlines, with no baggage fee or ticket change fee. If you travel last-minute or make a lot of changes to your itinerary, this is the airline to fly.
- Use Skype. Skype-to-Skype calls are free, and calls to anywhere else worldwide are available for low-cost. You can conference, share your screen, include video and more. You can use Skype on your Android phone or iPhone, too.
- Always bring a backup laptop battery and a cellphone portable charger. They are as thin as credit cards now, so there?s no excuse for not packing these essential tools.
- If you?re going to a convention, try the hotels nearby. The rate may be much cheaper, even if the hotel is right next door.
- Use technology. There are plenty of apps that can help you manage your itinerary, check flight times or find the best places to eat on a budget.
- Pack lightly when flying to avoid checked baggage fees. Unless you are going to a remote jungle, you can always pick up essentials at your destination.

New-Home Building at Highest Level in 3 Years | Signature One ...
The home-building industry continues to dig out of its slump as the pace of construction posts big jumps for single-family and multifamily houses.?Builders had a level of starts in June not seen since October 2008, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday.
Housing starts in June soared 6.9 percent, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 760,000 units. Broken down, single-family home construction, which makes up the largest segment of those new housing starts, increased 4.7 percent in June. Multifamily housing starts, considered a volatile segment of the market, jumped 12.8 percent last month.
Housing starts were nearly 24 percent higher in June compared to last year at that time.
?Housing continues to be the one sector of the U.S. economy that is outperforming expectations,? Michael Gapen, an economist at Barclays, told Reuters.
Still, while housing starts posted a big leap in June, new housing permits ? a gauge of future building ? dropped 3.7 percent in June.
