Amazon to let Kindle Fire HD buyers turn off ads

NEW YORK (AP) ? Amazon says buyers of its new Kindle Fire HD tablet will get the option to turn off the advertisements that appear on its standby screen for $15.

The online retailer showed off the tablet last week, and said there would be no option to turn off the ads. That was a departure from Amazon's previous policies. It has shipped Kindle e-readers with "Special Offers" ads on the standby screen, but users could pay to have them turned off.

Over the weekend, Amazon said that policy would apply to the Kindle Fire HD.

"We know from our Kindle reader line that customers love our special offers and very few people choose to opt out," says spokeswoman Kinley Pearsall.

The first Kindle Fire HD model will start shipping on Friday.

Seriously, if this was the American Dream, couldn't we have come up with something better?

"The Queen of Versailles" is funny, sad, infuriating, instructive. It's the American Dream inflated to ridiculous extremes, until it bursts.

More than a social morality tale, this is a character study, with the title well chosen.

"The Queen of Versailles" ought to be required viewing for anyone who blames the rich for yanking the rug out from under America's economy.

By the end, the movie has pulled off a small miracle: You become absorbed in the lives of these people for who they are and not what they own.

What I left with was not hatred. I disapprove of the values they represent, but I also find them fascinating and just slightly lovable.

One of the great unsayable truths about the American dream is that it is a bit of a Ponzi scheme ... our system admits a glimmer of hope that anyone, no matter how lowborn, can rise to the top.

Extremely funny and revealing ...

[Siegel] is now suing Greenfield for "misrepresentation". Well, I know whose side I'm on.

She epitomises a Western culture struggling to wean itself off debt.

Greenfield's film is bathed in Florida sunshine, adding to the sensation that we're watching Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous with a Marxist punchline.

Never has grotesque wealth looked so unenviable, or its removal been so entertaining, as in this garishly watchable riches-to-rags documentary ...

[Siegel] ultimately emerges as someone who belongs more in The Little House on the Prairie: ever cheerful, and triumphantly unimpeachable.

The temptation to be moralistic must have been overpowering, yet Greenfield finally manages to summon sympathy for people who at first seem vain, selfish and greedy.

Prepare to be shocked, disgusted and compelled.

In the end, these are human beings, not emblems - and it is this that makes this documentary one of the most watchable, for rich and poor alike.

A bizarre and mesmerising journey to the heart of Cloud Cuckoo Land.

It is a comedy that aspires to tragedy, and a metaphor for a nation collapsing beneath the incompatible, intolerable pressures of excess and inequity.

For all their garishness, the Siegels are pretty likable, even if attempts to make you sympathetic to their "plight" fall short.

It scores a lot of laughs at the Siegel's bad taste and odd ways of adapting to their newfound misfortune. Thankfully, Greenfield also makes the Siegels sympathetic.

If you get some kind of sick kick watching the mighty take a fall, The Queen of Versailles will be nothing short of a schadenfreudic ball.

It contains some useful information, I suppose, but I did not like these people, I hope never to meet them, and I wonder if the world wouldn't be a better place without them.

Watching Jackie fill cart after Walmart cart with crap the family doesn't need is to witness the new millennium's version of Marie Antoinette.

Can we feel sorry for super-filthy-rich rich people? Maybe not. But we can be fascinated by their insane spending. Lauren Greenfield gains uber-access to the excess.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration faces a weekend deadline to decide whether the Pakistan-based Haqqani network should be declared a terrorist organization, a complicated political decision as the U.S. withdraws from Afghanistan and pushes for a reconciliation pact to end more than a decade of warfare.

Enraged by a string of high-profile attacks on U.S. and NATO troops, Congress has ordered Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to give her verdict by Sunday. U.S. officials say there are disagreements within the administration over what to decide.

The U.S. already has placed sanctions on many Haqqani leaders and is targeting its members militarily but has held back from formally designating the al-Qaida-linked network a terrorist group amid concerns about hampering peace efforts in Afghanistan and U.S. relations with Pakistan.

Clinton, who is winding up a six-nation tour of the Asia-Pacific, was expected to send her report on the Haqqanis to Congress on Friday and announce her decision.

The U.S. long has branded the Haqqanis among the biggest threats to American and allied forces in Afghanistan, and to Afghanistan's long-term stability. A subsidiary of the Taliban, it is based in northern Pakistan but crosses the border to launch attacks, including a rocket-propelled grenade assault on the U.S. Embassy and NATO compound in Kabul in September.

But the group's increasingly prominent role in the insurgency and its close links to Pakistan's intelligence service complicate matters.

The Obama administration has been trying to coax Afghanistan's fighting groups into peace talks, offering the prospect of a Qatar-based political office for insurgents and even the transfer of several prisoners being held at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Negotiations have been dormant for months, and the Haqqanis have been among the least interested in talking.

The group also has enjoyed a close relationship with Pakistan. The U.S. and its often reluctant counterterrorism ally have been at loggerheads over the Haqqanis for years, with Washington accusing Islamabad of giving the network a free hand in the remote North Waziristan region and even providing it with some logistical support.

Pakistan says that its forces are stretched thin in fighting an insurgency that already has killed more than 30,000 people and that it cannot also take on the Haqqanis. Many analysts attribute the military's reluctance to its historical ties to the Haqqani network's founder, Jalaluddin Haqqani, and an assessment that the group can be an important ally in Afghanistan after U.S. forces withdraw in 2014.

Congress wants action. In July, it set a deadline to prod the Obama administration into imposing blanket sanctions on the group by designating it a foreign terrorist organization. If Clinton and other officials decide to withhold the designation, they must explain why.

U.S. officials cited disagreements about the designation. Some favor the designation, while others worry that it would elevate the Haqqanis from their current status as an amorphous, tribal movement. That could end up hurting counterterrorism efforts by increasing their appeal among would-be jihadists.

One option under consideration was that the State Department would announce its intention to declare the Haqqani network as a terrorist body, while leaving more time for all the legal hurdles involved in making such a designation. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss confidential evaluations.

Clinton said last week she'd meet her reporting obligations, without saying in which direction she would decide. But she stressed that the administration was pressuring the Haqqanis.

"We are drying up their resources, we are targeting their military and intelligence personnel and we are pressing the Pakistanis to step up their own efforts," Clinton said.

Last month, the U.S. scored a major counterterror success when an unmanned drone strike in Pakistan near the Afghan border killed one of Jalaluddin Haqqani's sons, Badruddin.

Badruddin was considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure.

The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin Haqqani sat on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan. It also blamed him for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter David Rohde.

Jalaluddin Haqqani created his network while serving as a leader in the decade-long insurgency against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, which began in 1979. He developed extensive foreign contacts, getting money, weapons and supplies from Pakistani intelligence, which in turn received billions of dollars from the U.S. and Saudi Arabia.

He served as Afghanistan's justice minister after the Soviets left and minister of tribal and border affairs after Taliban fundamentalists seized power in 1996. He joined the Taliban insurgency when the U.S. helped overthrow the regime after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Haqqani effectively retired in 2005, passing responsibility for day-to-day operations to his son Sirajuddin, who is accused of expanding the network's kidnapping and extortion operations. Reports also accuse the Haqqanis of lucrative drug trafficking and smuggling activity.

The U.S. already has designated Haqqani and his sons individually as terrorists.

U.K. carrier Everything Everywhere, the amalgam of Orange and T-Mobile U.K., has just announced a special event for Tuesday, September 11, the day before Apple is expected to announce the new iPhone 5. Alex Dobie of our Mobile Nations sibling site, Android Central, scored an invitation:

[The event will] likely to bring details of EE's upcoming 4G LTE network. Today's invite mentions that the company will be showing off its "new brand and the latest innovation in network technology." That'll be EE's recently-greenlit 1800MHz 4G network, then.

iMore previously reported that the next iPhone would include 4G LTE networking. The U.K. has struggled to launch an LTE network, with repeated delays in their spectrum auction keeping most carriers far behind the U.S. in terms of rollout. Everything Everywhere has worked out a clever way around that.

If Apple decides to support 4G LTE on bands and segments that work on Everything Everywhere, the U.K. could be in for two great days next week.

Kobo, which has been largely overshadowed by Amazon and Barnes & Noble in the eReader category, has announced a series of new devices, targeted primarily at the eReader and tablet markets. It has launched two new eReaders ? Kobo Glo and Kobo Mini, and an Android tablet ? Kobo Arc.

Kobo Mini

The Kobo Mini is a $79 device which comes with a 5 inch E-ink display and 2 GB of internal storage. It also offers Wi-Fi and will compete with the basic Kindle.

Kobo Glo

The Kobo Glo is a $129 device, and comes with a ComfortLight display which enables night-time reading. It has a 6 inch display, and couples internal storage with a microSD slot.

Kobo Arc

This is the most interesting device Kobo unveiled. It is a 7 inch tablet which is priced at $199 for 8 GB and $249 for 16 GB. It comes with a 1.5 GHz dual core processor, and is powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, presumably with a customized Kobo UI. It also has 1 GB of RAM and an IPS display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.

However, we expect Amazon to release an upgraded Kindle Fire today, which could pretty easily beat this device, not only in terms of hardware, but also pricing and content.

Let?s just wait and watch.

Futurity.org ? Screening cuts risk of breast cancer death by half

U. MELBOURNE (US) ? Experts report that women who undergo screening dramatically reduce their risk of dying from breast cancer.

A new study, published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, is the largest of its kind in Australia and one of the largest in the world. It followed about 4,000 women in a study of the BreastScreen program in Western Australia.

Carolyn Nickson, a research fellow at the University of Melbourne, and colleagues from the Melbourne School of Population Health say the findings reaffirm the importance?and effectiveness?of mammography.

The study focused on women between the ages of 50-69, who are in the target age range for screening. It included 427 cases where women had died from breast cancer and 3,650 control women who were still alive when the other women died.

The research team compared screening attendance between the two groups and found screening was much lower among women who had died from breast cancer, a finding that is consistent with a similar study from South Australia and with numerous studies from around the world.

Comparison with similar studies showed an average estimate of a 49 percent reduced risk of dying.

Some other studies, including studies from Australia, claim that screening doesn?t reduce risk of dying from breast cancer. However, these studies do not compare outcomes for individual women.

?Sound research methods have been used in this study. I believe it is time to move on from the debate about whether screening reduces mortality and to instead direct research resources to help improve the program for women who choose to use it,? Nickson says.

Transforming Human Rights Reporting: Merging Mainstream News ...

Human rights issues were never easily portrayed or understood in conventional news paradigms. Few news agencies can allocate sufficient resources to effectively depict these ongoing complex issues. Even with substantial budgets and protection, journalists often face life-threatening risks while reporting these stories. And try getting consumers to conceptualize the magnitude of violence in a country like Syria over a cup of coffee and a morning paper. Human rights content does not play well in a news model and consequentially remains under reported and misunderstood.

But the confluence of new media technologies could fundamentally transform that reality, augmenting news content, the way news is reported and thus, our worldwide understanding.

Three Examples Covering the Crisis in Syria

Plagued with escalating widespread violence and an official ban on international journalists, but armed with a country of digital savvy activists, technology enthusiasts have found the Syrian conflict an ideal guinea pig for this new type of reporting.

Purporting to document the ?widening of the war like no other,? The New York Times? Watching Syria?s War section is embracing this new form of journalism with a crowd-sourced version of war reporting. Instead of only featuring staff reports, the paper now publishes daily tweets and curated raw video shot by Syrian citizens on the ground. The editors recount how they found the curated footage, what they could substantiate and what they couldn?t, and speak with each video?s uploader whenever possible. Many of their articles have a ?Talk to us? section, like the following, that calls on?individuals to help verify each video.

The implications are far-reaching. Those thought to be the victims, and possibly perpetrators, of human rights violations are now content producers: inventing, constructing, and contesting the traditional media model.

And it isn?t just individuals on the ground who are being sourced for news content. Technology wizards? and artists? visualization tools are now embedded in mainstream media, helping audiences comprehend and engage with ongoing reporting.

In collaboration with movements.org, an organization empowering citizens to become digital activists, Al Jazeera released an interactive mapping tool to track Syrian defections, highlighting when and where defections occurred.

Users may interact with the material by clicking on circles. Each click illuminates the name of a diplomat, senior military and security official, cabinet member or parliament member and his or her current status in the regime.

Similarly, the Guardian recently published CartoDB team?s new tool titled A Year of Deaths Mapped. The map has the potential to improve bystanders? understanding and engagement with this unfathomable violence. Users press play and watch circular representations of deaths digitally unravel.

Will New Media Replace Mainstream Media?

What do these new sources mean for the future of news? Will the rise of new media technology obviate the need for mainstream media?

That?s unlikely. Instead, expansion of unconventional news content will amplify the importance of professional entities. Improved technology will enable an influx of innovative content producers, but similar to finding a friend at the end of a crowded concert the sheer amount of content being produced will also hinder our capacity to find these innovators. Both mainstream parties and their nontraditional counterparts will need each other. Both will have to work together. The best human rights reporting will form co-dependent relationships that mitigate the paradoxical technology content relationship.

Curating and contextualizing human rights videos from around the world, the WITNESS Human Rights Channel is inspired by this reality. On YouTube, 700 hours of footage are uploaded each day. Individuals who were once merely the object of a human rights report are now inspiring and guiding conversations. But without professional platforms, most of these citizen videos will remain lost in a sea of content.

Hence collaboration. At WITNESS we?ve partnered with the fact-checking new media organization, Storyful, to sift through hours of footage relevant to human rights. Our Citizen Watch and Watching Syria series organize and contextualize daily updates of raw citizen journalism, and our featured playlists analyze under reported issues like the persecution of Chile?s indigenous Mapuche population and an analysis of the convergence of climate change and human rights.

The Human Rights Channel, The Times? Watching Syria?s War, and the interactive tools found on Al Jazeera and the Guardian are a response to the power of new media technology. Mainstream news will remain relevant if it incorporates this nontraditional content; meanwhile, this content will only be relevant if marketed to its mainstream counterpart.

The field of human rights is riddled with seemingly dark hopeless scenarios, but without awareness and public discourse surrounding these subjects there is little chance in ameliorating such issues.

Will these new media paradigms inspire more research and discussion of human rights abuses? Or will improved technology encourage more of us to sit quietly scanning our iPhone at dinner, engaging but abruptly moving on to something even flashier?

They chose to date while married and then fell in love. Maybe with another liar and deceiver, but maybe they like looking in that mirror and seeing themselves reflected back. The fog is Bulldokey. After Dday I asked my husband if he would be okay with us having an open relationship so I can have some new love feelings too. He went ballistic. So they know dating while married is treading on treacherous turf.

IMO, cheaters are the type that throw people away when they no longer meet their every need. A high percentage of cheaters have personality disorders. Most of these are not curable. One book I read likened an affair to a car crash. The author said, in the aftermath everyone crawls out bloody, or dying or scarred for life. Adult minds realize that and choose not to bring a third party into a marriage.
