Alopekis ? The versatile dogs of the Greeks | Love My Pets GPS Pet ...

August 11, 2012 ? Jerry Welsh

Small dogs are highly valued in Greece. Alopekis is one of the dog breeds utilized by the Greek people as a loyal and affectionate companion and also as an all around working dog. During the ancient times, these small dogs are only considered as dog types and not breeds because they are strays that roam the streets. Careful breeding has resulted to the creation of a dog breed which was given the name Alopekis, taken from the word ?alopecis? meaning small and foxy

An Alopekis is indeed a small dog with fox-like features and graceful movements. An Alopekis has the wedge shaped head, the elongated muzzle and the prick ears of a fox. The bright almond or round shaped eyes that are colored to compliment the coloring of the coat show the dog?s lively and intelligent nature. This breeds sickle shaped tail that is proudly carried over the back and the smooth or wiry coat that come in eye catching color combinations are reasons why Alopekis owners proudly display their pets.

These small dogs were highly valued by the Greek people from antiquity and up to this very day. Alopekis were originally utilized to hunt vermin. The tenacity and the high prey drive make this foxy dog an excellent hunter of vermin. Alopekis are very active dogs and they would love nothing more than being taken in locations where their hunting prowess will be utilized. This is a versatile breed. This dog that was originally developed to be a ratter can be trained to do various works in the farm like herding ducks, guarding the livestock and property as well as protecting poultry from foxes.

These are working dogs but an Alopekis can easily adapt to life in the city. This dog can learn tricks easily thus as a family pet it can provide hours of entertainment for the family and because of the protective instinct, it will be a dependable guard of the family. An Alopekis is a happy dog. A Alopekis is a working dog but it makes a good pet as well because it has a lively, affectionate and friendly personality.

An Alopekis makes an ideal home companion but this breed is not for everyone. Just as with any other small breeds, an Alopekis too has the tendency to develop Small Dog Syndrome. This lovable breed has all the attributes of an ideal home companion but the owner has to be firm in handling the pet lest it develops traits that will make it an unmanageable home companion.

The Alopekis is a wonderful versatile dog from greece. At Sarah?s Dogs you can read all about this breed ? its history, origin, personality and more.
