Palm trees once thrived on today's icy coasts 52 million years ago

FRANKFURT. Given the predicted rise in global temperatures in the coming decades, climate scientists are particularly interested in warm periods that occurred in the geological past. Knowledge of past episodes of global warmth can be used to better understand the relationship between climate change, variations in atmospheric carbon dioxide and the reaction of Earth's biosphere. An international team led by scientists from the Goethe University and the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre in Frankfurt, Germany, has discovered an intense warming phase around 52 million years ago in drill cores obtained from the seafloor near Antarctica a region that is especially important in climate research. The study published in the journal Nature shows that tropical vegetation, including palms and relatives of today's tropical Baobab trees, was growing on the coast of Antarctica 52 million years ago. These results highlight the extreme contrast between modern and past climatic conditions on Antarctica and the extent of global warmth during periods of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.

Around 52 million years ago, the concentration of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere was more than twice as high as today. "If the current CO2 emissions continue unabated due to the burning of fossil fuels, CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere, as they existed in the distant past, are likely to be achieved within a few hundred years", explains Prof. Jrg Pross, a paleoclimatologist at the Goethe University and member of the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) in Frankfurt, Germany. "By studying naturally occurring climate warming periods in the geological past, our knowledge of the mechanisms and processes in the climate system increases. This contributes enormously to improving our understanding of current human-induced global warming."

Computer models indicate that future climate warming will be particularly pronounced in high-latitude regions, i.e., near the poles. Until now, however, it has been unclear how Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems responded in the geological past to a greenhouse climate with high atmospheric CO2 concentrations.

The scientists working with Prof. Pross analysed rock samples from drill cores on the seabed, which were obtained off the coast of Wilkes Land, Antarctica, as part of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). The rock samples are between 53 and 46 million years old and contain fossil pollen and spores that are known to originate from the Antarctic coastal region. The researchers were thus able to reconstruct the local vegetation on Antarctica and, accordingly, interpret the presence of tropical and subtropical rainforests covering the coastal region 52 million years ago.

In an area where the Antarctic ice sheet borders the Southern Ocean today, frost-sensitive and warmth-loving plants such as palms and the ancestors of today's baobab trees flourished 52 million years ago. The scientists' evaluations show that the winter temperatures on the Wilkes Land coast of Antarctica were warmer than 10 degrees Celsius at that time, despite three months of polar night. The continental interior, however, was noticeably cooler, with the climate supporting the growth of temperate rainforests characterized by southern beech and Araucaria trees of the type common in New Zealand today. Additional evidence of extremely mild temperatures was provided by analysis of organic compounds that were produced by soil bacteria populating the soils along the Antarctic coast.

These new findings from Antarctica also imply that the temperature difference between the low latitudes and high southern latitudes during the greenhouse phase 52 million years ago was significantly smaller than previously thought. "The CO2 content of the atmosphere as assumed for that time interval is not enough on its own to explain the almost tropical conditions in the Antarctic", says Pross. "Another important factor was the transfer of heat via warm ocean currents that reached Antarctica." When the warm ocean current collapsed and the Antarctic coast came under the influence of cooler ocean currents, the tropical rainforests including palms and Baobab relatives also disappeared.

The Goethe University, with its strong research focus, is based in Frankfurt, Europe's financial metropolis. It was founded 94 years ago by Frankfurt citizens and is now one of Germany's ten largest universities. On January 1, 2008 it returned to its historical roots as a university financed by foundations, guaranteeing it an exceptional degree of autonomy. And the historical ensemble of buildigns designed by Julius Poelzig back in the 1920s in Frankfurt's Westend is now the hub of what, when complete, will be Germany's most beautiful campus - the construction work will cost a total of about EUR 600 million. Since 2000, over 50 new foundation-financed professorships and visiting professorships have been established, meaning the Goethe University is again the trailblazers in Germany, and has been well up with leaders for three consecutive issues of the CHE's three research ranking table and the German Academic Excellence Initiative.

PFT: Locker to start over Hasselbeck for Titans

Vince YoungAP

Bills backup QBs Vince Young and Tyler Thigpen haven?t looked particularly good so far in training camp.

Dolphins RB Reggie Bush isn?t backing down from his goal of leading the league in rushing: ?I believe in setting the highest goals possible. If you don?t set the highest standards for yourself, you don?t belong in this game. So I try to set the highest goals for myself and hopefully some of the younger guys follow suit.?

Patriots coach Bill Belichick has seen ?an awful lot of things we need to work on? so far in training camp.

Businesses near the Jets? training camp are glad the Jets acquired Tim Tebow.

Ravens rookie OLB Courtney Upshaw didn?t practice Tuesday after suffering a bruised shoulder.

The Bengals are giving rave reviews to the new grass on their practice field.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur knows most people think he?s got one of the worst teams in the league, but says, ?I?m not concerned with that. My concern is the players, their mindset, winning football games and the fans of this community who can go to work on Monday and be proud because their team won. That?s what my concerns are.?

Steelers S Troy Polamalu says that just because he?s one of the longest-tenured veterans on the team, that won?t make him yell and scream at the younger guys on the team: ?I am definitely not a vocal leader, if a leader at all.?

Texans rookie RG Brandon Brooks and second-year RT Derek Newton have impressed early in training camp.

If Colts long snapper Justin Snow plays in every game this season, he?ll tie Peyton Manning?s team record with 208 consecutive games played.

Jaguars RB Rashad Jennings is getting increased opportunities with Maurice Jones-Drew holding out.

Titans WR Tommie Campbell shrugged it off when a radio station erroneously reported that he was a passenger in the car when teammate Kenny Britt was charged with DUI at Fort Campbell: ?My agent called and told me about it. I was upset, but at the same time I understand that people make mistakes. I guess somebody heard, ?Fort Campbell,? and thought, ?Tommie Campbell.? I?ve got more important things to worry about than that.?

Broncos rookie QB Brock Osweiler has shown good arm strength and good mobility so far in training camp.

Said Chiefs QB Matt Cassel, ?There?s no doubt this is the best personnel group we?ve had since we?ve been here in Kansas City. Now it?s also about us coming together as an offensive unit. You never know until you get out there and start going and how you?re going to mesh.?

Said Raiders coach Dennis Allen of QB Carson Palmer, ?He?s been exceptional. He?s got a nice command of the offense, and he?s doing a good job running it.?

With LT Jared Gaither missing practice time, the Chargers have undrafted rookie Mike Harris working with the first-string offensive line.

The Cowboys are exercising caution with NT Jay Ratliff?s foot injury.

Said Giants CB Prince Amukamara, ?I do have a lot of expectations for myself, and I know the organization has a lot of expectations for me.?

Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder says he?ll be using instant replays this season to help diagnose everything from concussions to high ankle sprains by looking at the videos of the plays in which they occurred.

Redskins FB Darrel Young says his hamstring is holding him back: ?I?m a little tight right now. I?m going to go get worked on and see if I can practice or not.?

Says Bears receivers coach Darryl Drake of rookie WR Alshon Jeffery, ?The size, the hands, all those things you see are legit. How he?s going to react in a game situation, we don?t know. But we?ll know soon.?

Lions great Barry Sanders says Jim Schwartz shouldn?t be blamed for the team?s off-field issues: ?As a coach, there is only so much you can do. You are dealing with young men and you can?t babysit them. As much as they are in your organization, they are a part of your family, but they go off and they have to make quick decisions on their own.?

The Packers are expecting big things from S Morgan Burnett.

Vikings K Blair Walsh is off to a solid start in training camp.

Falcons undrafted rookie QB Dominique Davis has impressed coach Mike Smith.

The Panthers see DT Ron Edwards as a huge presence in the middle.

Here?s Saints WR Adrian Arrington talking about getting opportunities to play with the first string.

Buccaneers C Jeremy Zuttah is glad to be entrenched as a starter at one position, rather than bouncing around all five spots on the offensive line.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt likes the extra work that comes with playing in the Hall of Fame Game.

The Rams want to be bigger and meaner this season.

Said 49ers TE Delanie Walker of playing through a broken jaw, ?When you think about injuries, you?re going to get hurt. I don?t think about it at all.?

Said Seahawks coach Pete Carroll of WR Braylon Edwards, ?He?s a tough competitor. He blocks and is aggressive when he gets his chances. He runs aggressively with the ball in his hands, and he?s got a big catching range.?

High-Profile Geneticists Post Findings on Popular Pre-Publication Site

News | Technology

Population biologists are turning more and more to arXiv, already popular among physicists, to gain wider readership and rapid reviews of results

arxiv.org, cornell university library Image: http://arxiv.org/

From Nature magazine

The preprint server arXiv.org is perhaps best known as the preserve of theoretical physicists and astrophysicists. But 2008 saw an influx of submissions of unpublished manuscripts, or preprints, by condensed-matter physicists who wanted to stake claims to the fast-moving subject of iron-based superconductors called pnictides. Now the life sciences may be on the cusp of their own ?pnictide moment?, with population geneticists leading the charge.

In the past month, leading research groups have posted to arXiv high-profile papers on the genetic history of southern Africans1 and Europeans2. Other prominent population geneticists have submitted methods-based papers to the server, which is hosted by Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The number of biology papers on the server is still small in comparison with physical-sciences preprints (see ?Biology opens up?), but Paul Ginsparg, a theoretical physicist at Cornell who founded arXiv in 1991 (ref. 3), welcomes what he hopes could be a sea change.

?It?s wonderful if biologists are belatedly joining the late twentieth century,? he quips. ?Welcome to the party; better late than never.?

Life-sciences papers have existed on arXiv almost since its inception, but biologists have typically shied away from this approach amid fears of getting scooped, or of offending journals. It was only in 2003 that the site inaugurated a section specifically for papers on quantitative biology, or ?q-bio? for short. Yet papers posted to the section in the past tended to report esoteric models and methods, often from physical scientists dabbling in biology.

Rich in mathematics and steeped in the open-data traditions of genomics, population genetics would seem the ideal candidate to dip its toes into pre-publication, which brings the advantages of speed and open discussion. ?I grew up in the physics community,? says Richard Neher, a population geneticist at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in T?bingen, Germany, ?and putting things up on arXiv is a natural thing for me to do.? Neher has co-authored more than ten?submissions to arXiv since 2004.

Despite such examples, one of the best-known life-sciences preprints on arXiv comes from microbiology, not population genetics. Posted as a rebuttal to a 2011 Science paper reporting that a strain of Halomonas bacteria from a Californian lake could incorporate arsenic into its DNA4, the preprint appeared on the server in January5 before its publication in Science this month6. Yet a population geneticist still played a part ? the paper?s co-author, Leonid Kruglyak, of Princeton University in New Jersey and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, works in the field. Kruglyak says he will consider arXiv for future studies from his lab.

Another attention-grabbing submission by prominent geneticists, posted on 23?July, compares genomic variation in 22 African populations to suggest an ancient genetic link between people in southern and eastern Africa1. One of the paper?s senior authors, geneticist David Reich of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, publishes routinely in Nature and the Public Library of Science journals, and co-author Carlos Bustamante, of Stanford University School of Medicine in California, is a leader in the field. Reich says that first author Joseph Pickrell, also at Harvard Medical School, suggested using arXiv. Reich and the other co-authors saw no good reason not to post the manuscript there. ?It could be an example of the younger generation coming in and finding this sort of thing natural,? says Ginsparg.

VFEN Becomes First 501(c)(3) to Teach Financial Literacy to Veterans

Veterans Financial Education Network (VFEN) announced today the launch of its non-profit organization dedicated to making veterans and service members more financially literate.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) July 31, 2012

VFEN is the first organization that teaches our nation?s heroes about the importance of personal financial management and even how to become savvy investors. Since public education does not place a heavy emphasis on finance, many of our nation?s youth are mismanaging their money.

"Regardless of what your job is, everyone is (or at least wants to be) in the business of making money, but once you make it, what then? What do you do with $20,000 when you?re a 19-year-old who has just returned from combat in Iraq and has never been taught anything about personal financial management? Sadly, you waste it." says Clayton Cohn, President of VFEN and OIF veteran.

VFEN is the veteran-targeted division of Playdoh Financial Education, Inc., a federal, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to the proliferation of financial awareness. All donations are 100% tax-deductible, and their efficiency rating is 100% meaning that every penny of every dollar donated goes directly towards educating veterans and service members. All ancillary expenses to the organization are paid for by outside businesses and individuals so that the coveted 100% efficiency rating can be maintained.

Teaching veterans about proper money-management techniques just scratches the surface of what VFEN offers. VFEN?s volunteer instructors, all of whom are certified as either Registered Investment Advisers or CPAs, give lectures and seminars to retired veterans, active-duty personnel and military families covering a multitude of subjects from cost-reduction to entrepreneurship, but VFEN?s latest venture is an 8-week financial ?boot camp? designed to teach veterans how to make money in the financial markets.

The curriculum, developed by a combination of veterans, traders, and educators aims to teach veterans about finance from the ground up. It starts with basic economics, accounting and finance and concludes with a capstone in which every student evaluates, and is evaluated, on their abilities as a proprietary trader.

Another benefit of VFEN is that it is creating a network for all veterans who are interested in financial literacy to utilize. "We expect to become the de facto organization for all veterans and service members who want to, at the very least, ensure that their financial house is in order," added Cohn. The guise of the organization simply being: educate, create jobs, and provide a database from which to network from?at absolutely no charge to any vet. "With the current worldwide economic instability, it is no surprise that veterans do not know where to turn to. When you do not possess the knowledge to manage your money you have two choices. The first is to stay out of the market, miss opportunities and simply spend it. The second is to find a way to make your money work for you by either finding a money-manager who is both trustworthy and knows what he is doing or learning how to invest on your own," concluded Cohn.

About VFEN:

VFEN was founded by a group of Marine veterans who have found success in the financial world (after honorably concluding their tours of duty) by starting their own financial services firm, Marketaction, Inc. VFEN prides themselves on offering free financial services and education to all veterans, service members and their families, and also feel that maintaining a 100% efficiency rating is paramount given that the organization was created to teach financial literacy. They want people to know that every penny of every dollar donated goes directly towards teaching our nation?s heroes.
